Soma – Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

What is Soma?

Soma (carisoprodol) is a centrally-acting skeletal muscle relaxant for acute musculoskeletal pain. It modifies nerve communication in the CNS, producing muscle relaxation and pain relief. Used as part of a plan including rest and physical therapy.

Uses

  • Acute musculoskeletal pain (short-term, 2-3 weeks)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Back pain with muscle spasm
  • Post-injury recovery

Dosage

250-350mg three times daily and at bedtime. Maximum duration: 2-3 weeks. Not recommended under 16 or over 65.

Side Effects

Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, increased heart rate

Serious: Seizures, dependence, severe allergic reactions, CNS depression

Precautions

  • Schedule IV controlled substance
  • Metabolized to meprobamate (controlled substance) in the body
  • Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants
  • May impair driving ability
  • Use caution with history of substance abuse
