Ativan – Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

What is Ativan?

Ativan (lorazepam) is an intermediate-acting benzodiazepine for anxiety disorders. It has predictable absorption and no active metabolites, making it preferred for certain populations including elderly patients and those with liver issues.

Uses

  • Anxiety disorders and anxiety with depression
  • Insomnia due to anxiety
  • Pre-operative sedation
  • Status epilepticus (IV form)

Dosage

Anxiety: 2-6mg/day in divided doses. Insomnia: 2-4mg at bedtime. Elderly: Start 1-2mg/day.

Side Effects

Common: Sedation, dizziness, weakness, unsteadiness

Serious: Respiratory depression, paradoxical agitation, dependence, withdrawal seizures

Precautions

  • Black Box Warning: Risk with opioid use
  • No active metabolites — safer for liver patients
  • Gradual tapering required for discontinuation
  • Use lowest effective dose for shortest duration
