What is Adderall?
Adderall contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, central nervous system stimulants that increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels. It improves focus, attention, and impulse control for ADHD patients.
Uses
- ADHD in children and adults
- Narcolepsy
Dosage
Adults IR: Start 5mg once/twice daily, increase by 5mg weekly. Range: 5-40mg/day.
Adults XR: Start 20mg once daily in the morning.
Side Effects
Common: Decreased appetite, insomnia, dry mouth, increased heart rate, nervousness
Serious: Cardiovascular events, psychiatric symptoms, growth suppression in children
Precautions
- Schedule II controlled substance with high abuse potential
- Cardiovascular screening recommended before starting
- Avoid afternoon/evening doses (insomnia)
- Do not take with MAOIs
What is the difference between Adderall and Adderall XR?
IR lasts 4-6 hours (2-3x daily). XR lasts 10-12 hours (once daily) using two-phase bead release.
