What is Soma?
Soma (carisoprodol) is a centrally-acting skeletal muscle relaxant for acute musculoskeletal pain. It modifies nerve communication in the CNS, producing muscle relaxation and pain relief. Used as part of a plan including rest and physical therapy.
Uses
- Acute musculoskeletal pain (short-term, 2-3 weeks)
- Muscle spasms
- Back pain with muscle spasm
- Post-injury recovery
Dosage
250-350mg three times daily and at bedtime. Maximum duration: 2-3 weeks. Not recommended under 16 or over 65.
Side Effects
Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, increased heart rate
Serious: Seizures, dependence, severe allergic reactions, CNS depression
Precautions
- Schedule IV controlled substance
- Metabolized to meprobamate (controlled substance) in the body
- Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants
- May impair driving ability
- Use caution with history of substance abuse
How quickly does Soma work?
Begins working within 30 minutes. Effects last approximately 4-6 hours.
