What is Xanax?
Xanax (alprazolam) is a fast-acting benzodiazepine for anxiety disorders and panic disorder. It enhances GABA effects, producing a calming effect on the nervous system. Known for rapid onset of action.
Uses
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Panic Disorder
- Anxiety with depression (short-term relief)
Dosage
Anxiety: 0.25-0.5mg three times daily. Max: 4mg/day.
Panic: Start 0.5mg three times daily. Typical: 5-6mg/day.
Side Effects
Common: Drowsiness, fatigue, impaired coordination, memory problems
Serious: Respiratory depression (with opioids), paradoxical agitation, withdrawal seizures
Precautions
- Black Box Warning: Risk of profound sedation/death when used with opioids
- Physical dependence can develop at prescribed doses
- Never stop abruptly — must taper gradually
- Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice
How quickly does Xanax work?
